Historic Low

The number of murders recorded on the island of Montreal in 2017 was the lowest since 1972, when this statistic began to be compiled. “Historic Low” photographs the places where the murders took place one year after their occurrence. The series is an exploration of the city’s urban landscape as well as a documentation of the mundane quality of the places where violence can occur.

The objective of this project is to open a door to reflection on everyday violence, its causes and the long-term consequences it has in the urban environment. In addition, the images invite us to question our perception of danger in a city recognized worldwide as safe, not forgetting that even if the number of murders is considered low, each murder represents a tragedy.
